During the Spring of 2026, the Faculty Association Executive team and membership drafted and submitted a statement to the People’s Consultation on AI.
The Emily Carr University Faculty Association is committed to supporting the professional rights and responsibilities of its members, while prioritizing transparency, care, and consideration in the workplace, and fostering collegiality amongst its members. Our membership includes faculty who make use of generative AI (genAI) systems as well as faculty who have chosen to boycott and opt out, for principled reasons and out of objection to the way Big Tech companies activate generative AI functions without prior notice during routine software updates, thus eroding consumer agency and choice.
The arts have always been at the core of what it means to be human. As such, we have a duty to humanity and ourselves to sustain this legacy for future generations. We have a duty to examine the unrealistic claims made for this technology and to weigh the evidence of its real-time, currently occurring harms.
This statement focuses on impacts of and recommendations regarding genAI systems, based on large language models (LLMs) and multimodal large language models (MLLMs) trained on indiscriminately scraped data, that are commercially and easily available through GPT such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, NotebookLM, Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, Grok etc. This does not include locally hosted learning models trained on specifically scoped datasets for specifically scoped purposes.
